RUN for awareness

is a non-profit organization based in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Our main objective is to bring awareness to the community of the benefits of incorporating healthy grains, vegetables, fruits and alternative proteins into our daily menu. Through lectures, workshops and cooking classes we provide information for making better choices at the grocery store and demonstrate how anyone can prepare delicious, nutritious meals without compromising taste.

Our Mission Statement:

To help people help themselves and one another
achieve a healthy diet and lifestyle

"The Run For Awareness was a delight and the food was delicious! ... what a great way to celebrate and spread the word about the positive impact that natural products can have on one's health and well-being. If you have not yet enjoyed this wonderful experience I suggest you check it out this year ... Bravo!"

HERE'S HOW WE STARTED:

Like all of us, Louise White and Maribeth MacIntyre kept hearing about all the runs in support of cures for specific diseases and debilitating conditions. Independently, a thought occurred to each of them.

What was needed was a positive run, a run promoting health! A run dedicated to the awareness of how a healthy diet and lifestyle can go a long way in preventing those same diseases.

Sharing their thoughts with each other, they realized it was something they must pursue. So they called together some like-minded friends and the group made a commitment to plan their first event for June 2004.

Ideas built upon ideas.

There was a need for awareness, but also there was a need to educate. So they would offer classes to demonstrate how easy it is to transition away from the traditional meat-and-potatoes diet.

They would provide recipes for healthier versions of the foods most of us grew up eating, offer suggestions for more wholesome alternatives to replace refined and processed ingredients, and provide information on making better choices at the grocery store.

They would have taste-testing so that everyone could see for themselves that nutritious could still be delicious.

And they would wrap up the week with a do-able 3km course that anyone could run, skip, walk or stroll at their own pace.

And so, the Run For Awareness Association was born.
